Harajuku icon Kyary Pamyu Pamyu sprinkles kawaii vocals over a neon-soaked soundscape on her J-Pop single “Gum Gum Girl,” produced by Yasutaka Nakata. Kyary’s first single of 2021 arrives on her birthday and coincides with her 10th anniversary as an artist. The official “Gum Gum Girl” music video stars Kyary as a futuristic ninja who uses martial arts and supernatural powers to battle her nemesis.
“Gum Gum Girl” marks Kyary’s second Dim Mak appearance, following Steve Aoki’s remix of her acclaimed single “Ninja Re Bang Bang.” The “Gum Gum Girl” artwork is hand painted by Kyary herself, drawing inspiration from chewing gum wrappers. The acrylic painting shows Kyary’s enthusiasm towards taking on new challenges with her own hands in this 10th anniversary year.
Continuing her partnership with the Nintendo Switch video game Ninjala, “Gum Gum Girl” is set to be featured as in-game music from January 29th to February 18th and a special commemorative “Gum Gum Girl” T-shirt will drop for player avatars. Back by popular demand, the song, costume avatars, and dance emotes for “Ninja Re Bang Bang (Steve Aoki Remix)” will also be available for in-game purchase during this time.
