Chattanooga center Abbey Cornelius has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from Feb. 17-23, receiving the honor for the second time this season, the league office announced today.
Cornelius posted back-to-back double-doubles last week in the Mocs’ series with UNCG last week at the Roundhouse. She averaged 14 points, 13.5 rebounds and three assists for the week. She had 11 points and 11 rebounds in the win over the Spartans on Friday with three assists and two blocked shots. She shot 62.5 percent from the field in 32 minutes on the court.
On Sunday, she led the Mocs with 17 points, making a career-high seven rebounds in the contest, and pulled down 16 rebounds, two shy of her career-high set earlier this season against Vanderbilt.
Abbey leads Chattanooga in rebounding this season and ranks third in the Southern Conference. She is second in the league for blocked shots and ranked 30th in the nation and 33rd in the NCAA for rebounds.
The Knoxville, Tenn., junior holds a 3.96 GPA in Exercise Science.
Chattanooga is on the road to close out the SoCon season Thursday night at East Tennessee State. The Mocs are currently third in the conference standings at 8-5. The game is set to tip off at 7:00 p.m. at Brooks Gym on the ETSU campus.
