University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior wrestler Drew Nicholson is the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from Feb. 24-March 2. The selection is made by the conference office.
Nicholson took home gold at the 2021 SoCon Wrestling Championship at 165 pounds and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler on Sunday in Boone, N.C. Nicholson, the No. 3 seed, defeated No. 25 RJ Mosley of Gardner-Webb, the No. 2 seed, in the quarterfinal match with a narrow 3-2 decision. It was his first win over Mosley in four career meetings.
The junior went on to defeat No. 4 seed Dazjon Casto in the finals with another 3-2 decision. Casto had upset the SoCon Wrestler of the Year and top seed, App State’s Will Formato, in his semifinal. Nicholson is the 22nd Moc to take home SoCon tournament MVP honors since UTC joined the league in 1978. He is the first to bring that individual award back to Chattanooga since Kamaal Shakur in 2016.
The Memphis, Tennessee, junior holds a 3.63 grade point average and is majoring in Engineering Technology Management.
Chattanooga finished the regular season 8-4 overall and 6-2 in conference action. Nicholson’s 165-pound championship title advanced him to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which will be held on March 18-20 at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
