Men’s Golf Surges into Tie for Third with Final 18 to Go

The Chattanooga Mocs made the most of moving day Friday in the Sea Palms Invitational. The group shot the second-lowest round of the day of 293 to climb into a tie for third on the leaderboard with 578.

Chattanooga cruised through the first 16 holes before high winds wreaked havoc on the field on 17 and 18. The counters dropped eight shots over those two holes, six coming on 18 alone.

“The way it played today, I’d have taken four bogeys on 18 tee and walked off,” Coach Mark Guhne recalled. “It was really tough coming in. I’m very proud of the way the group played today.

“Sometimes the score total doesn’t reflect the quality of the fight. If we carry this over to Saturday, we’ll be in good shape.”

Junior A.J. Lintunen fired 69 for a 3-under 142 total through 36 holes. Paul Conroy and Oliver Simonsen added 74s. Conroy is one behind Lintunen shooting 2-under 140.

Leon Bader added 76 to the counting score while Gabe Hunter’s 78 was the drop tally. Connor Nolan led today’s individual crew. Alex Cobb shot 73 with a 79 from Dominic Jones.

Jacksonville State leads with 575 with Western Carolina one back at 576. Chattanooga is joined in third by Appalachian State and Kennesaw State with 578.

Georgia State’s Josh Edgar is the individual leader with a 7-under total of 135. Austin Schoonmaker of Wright State is second with 138 while Lintunen lurks in third at 139 and Conroy and Cobb are tied for fourth with 140. Nolan is one shot shy of the top 10 tied for 12th at 1 over.

The Mocs score is more impressive when delving into the numbers. The course played easier yesterday with the field averaging 73.99 strokes per student-athlete. Today’s number (76.61) was more than two-and-half shots higher.

Chattanooga spiked slightly compared to the rest of the squads. The counting cards on day 1? 71.25. Over today’s second 18? 73.25. The team averages are even more telling on the Mocs surge with the field posting 289.31 (-4.31) Thursday before rising to 302.00 (-9.00) Friday.

Saturday morning’s final round opens in the morning. Live scoring and pairings when available are under scoring linked above.
