hattanooga junior Maggie Shaw was named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week for all women’s soccer matches played March 22-28 the league office announced today.
Shaw, a defender from Columbia, S.C., anchored a Mocs defense that recorded two shutouts and put Chattanooga in third place in the SoCon standings. Only two shots on goal were recorded over the weekend on 11 shots taken.
On Friday last week, UTC posted a 1-0 shutout against The Citadel, allowing the Bulldogs three shots in the match with just one on goal. The win moved the Mocs to third place ahead of Mercer in the conference standings.
Two days later, Chattanooga came away with its third straight and fourth SoCon shutout of the season with a 1-0 win over Mercer to further solidify its spot in the standings at third. The Bears took eight shots with just one making its way near the goal.
Shaw was a preseason all-conference selection by the Southern Conference coaches and a member of the 2019 SoCon All-Tournament team.
In her three seasons with UTC, the Mocs have recorded 21 shutouts, a school-record nine last season, and allowed less than one goal per game in 46 games.
Chattanooga wraps up the SoCon regular season this weekend on the road at UNCG Thursday and VMI Saturday morning.
