Women’s Golf, Hamilton Runners Up at Black Creek

The Chattanooga Mocs finished tied for second at the Chattanooga Classic at Black Creek Club. The Mocs 894 was matched by Iowa as the duo dueled ETSU (887) for the title.

Chattaooga’s charge was led by Esme Hamilton who finished second with 2-under 214. She and medalist Tereza Melecka (212) dominated the field as the only to complete 54 holes under par with the third-place duo of Morgan Goldstein (Iowa) and Catherine Caudill (Middle Tennessee) coming in at 221.

The Mocs, Bucs and Hawkeyes played as team pairings throughout the day. Each held the lead with ETSU taking over at the turn. Melecka was rolling as well at 6 under through 12 while Hamilton sat at even. That’s where it got interesting.

Hamilton carded back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14 making up five of the six strokes as Melecka scored double bogey-bogey in a head-to-head matchup. Pars on 15 preceded a Melecka birdie on 16 and pars at 17 and 18 for the final margin.

Her 73 led the Mocs over today’s 299. Beatriz Barrios carded 74 with a 75 from Dorota Zalewska and 77 by Daphne van Son. Jefimija Dordevic had the drop score of 83.

Four Mocs finished in the top 11. Hamilton as noted was second as van Son earned her fourth top 10 tying for eighth at 226. One shot kept Barrios and Zalewska out of the top 10 tying for 11th with 227. Dordevic shot 246.

The Mocs complete their regular season next week at the Brickyard Collegiate April 5-6 in Macon, Ga. They start postseason play at the Southern Conference Championships April 19-20 on Kiawah Island, S.C.
