A late goal on a corner kick propelled UNCG to a 1-0 win over the Chattanooga Mocs Friday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium in Southern Conference women’s soccer action.
The Mocs outshot the Spartans 14-12 with a 5-3 shots on goal advantage. UTC had multiple scoring opportunities throughout the match. Osa Iyare had seven of the shots for Chattanooga. She and Mackenzie Smith, who took four shots including a header in the box, had two shots on goal.
The Spartans’ score came in the 75th minute on a goal by Eliza Radoll off a corner kick. Kaley Tucker assisted the effort. The ball was served into the box and Chattanooga keeper Ashton Shields came away from the net in an effort to gather the ball. It was pitched over her hands and off a Mocs’ defenders head into the goal for the score.
Iyare responded with a shot that bounced high off the crossbar and gathered in by UNCG keeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper when it came down.
Tyler-Cooper recorded five saves and Shields had two for the Mocs.
The Mocs remain in third in the league standings, three behind Furman who fell to second with Samford’s win over VMI today. UNCG moved past Mercer for the fourth spot in the standings.
