In a season postponed, shortened, and marked with an asterisk, the Chattanooga soccer team rose above the noise for its best finish in program history while garnering a record number of postseason awards.
Gavin McKinney was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year. Maggie Shaw earned SoCon Defensive Player of the Year. Chloe Arnold and Lauren Dluzewski were selected All-Conference Second Team and Kendra Mueller and Ao Yamada were named to the All-Freshman Team.
McKinney, in his sixth season at the helm, led the Mocs to their best SoCon finish at third place in the league standings. UTC posted a 6-2-1 record with five shutouts in SoCon play as well as a clean sheet against North Alabama in its lone non-conference match.
Junior Maggie Shaw, a preseason selection for All-Conference, earned first team honors and was picked by the league coaches as the Defensive Player of the Year. Shaw earned Player of the Week as a member of the Mocs’ defense that posted shutout victories against The Citadel and Mercer.
Fellow defender, senior Lauren Dluzewski, earned All-Conference Second Team honors. The pair led a Mocs’ defense that posted a 0.48 goals against average, allowed just five goals and recorded six shutouts this season.
Joining Dluzewski on the second team was senior Chloe Arnold. Arnold leads the Mocs in scoring this season with nine points on four goals and one assist. The Bristol, Tenn., native connected on UTC’s only penalty kick this season and has two game winners and was UTC’s first Player of the Week this season.
Rounding out the awards are Kendra Mueller and Ao Yamada who were both named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team. Mueller scored back-to-back game winners for UTC against Western Carolina and East Tennessee State and earned Player of the Week honors. Yamada saw action in all 10 games for the Mocs in her rookie season. She took three shots on the year with two on goal.
Chattanooga heads to Greenville, S.C., to take on second-seeded Furman Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Stone Stadium. The game will be aired live on ESPN+ with Bryant Lambert.
