In-demand Los Angeles-based producer / collaborator Evan Taylor is making his debut as a solo artist with “Song 3 (a primer).” Taylor wrote, produced and performed all of the instruments on the song recorded between Gus Seyffert’s Sargent Recorders and his own studio, Loantaka Sound. It was engineered and mixed by Sean Cook (Pharoah Sanders, Angel Olsen, St. Vincent).
The charmingly dreamy and subdued “Song 3 (a primer)” evolves into a multi-layered soundscape with thunderous percussion blasts, renegade synthesizers, dusty harpsichord, and haunting choral vocals. The lyrics are a series of Taylor’s societal observations that both inspire and unnerve him or as he says “the energetic maze that helps us evolve”.
Taylor intends on releasing more solo material in the near future and more immediately with Purple Witch of Culver while continuing to produce a laundry list of LA indie favorites. “Song 3 (a primer)” will be released on Taylor’s own label, Loantaka Records (Jess Cornelius, Sofia Bolt, Easy Love).
Evan Taylor has never identified as the archetype of “Los Angeles Indie Producer” let alone “Artist”. He calls his encyclopedic knowledge of the Beach Boys a party trick and defensively refers to his home state of New Jersey as “mostly farmland”. His brand is staying off brand. “The scene” culture to him is the most problematic aspect of being in his faction of the music industry.
Now 34, Taylor has remained behind the scenes for most of his career while shelving countless solo efforts. He served as musical director, producer, and touring musician for Parliament Funkadelic’s keyboard wizard, Bernie Worrell, Jimmy Destri of Blondie, and The Chapin Sisters. He has made 1960’s country influenced records with members of Black Flag, participated in eclectic recording projects with mike watt, and performed with practically every member of Talking Heads.
Taylor is currently working with his critically acclaimed duo, Purple Witch of Culver, in which he serves as producer and multi-instrumentalist as well as collaborating on solo material for Warpaint’s Theresa Wayman.
