Kaylee Elizabeth today announced her debut album Playing With Fire—produced by Andy D. Park (Death Cab For Cutie, Pedro The Lion, Kississippi)—will be released on June 11th, 2021. She has also shared the rollicking, ‘70s pop/rock-reminiscent single “Not Be Told” alongside its Benjamin J. Strickland-directed video. “‘Not Be Told’ is a song about owning our decisions and the leaps of faith we take along any path of faith or relationship,” Kaylee remarks. The song follows the “stark and beautiful” (The Guardian) standalone single and additional Playing With Fire track “Passing Through,” released last fall.
Across the soul-searching and seeking Playing With Fire, Kaylee Elizabeth reflects on themes of shortcomings and asking for forgiveness, being honest about desires and doubts, the surrender of bitterness and resentment, and the peace and joy that can bring. Her voice is soft but sure, warm but direct, and seasoned by time spent in Ireland studying traditional singing, as well as years on the road with The Native Sibling (her duo with her older brother). And while these are her first songs written solo, creating Playing With Fire felt like a homecoming as she returned to the guitar after years playing keys.
Playing With Fire was recorded in Kaylee Elizabeth’s hometown of Seattle, WA, with Park. To back her in the studio, she enlisted musicians with whom she had never officially collaborated before, including: Jessica Dobson (Deep Sea Diver, Beck, The Shins), Sean Lane (Pedro the Lion, Perfume Genius), Michael Porter, and Zander Hawley. Park’s production and the band’s layering of electric guitar, ambient sounds, horns, and percussion give the album both continuity and variety, all while keeping Kaylee Elizabeth’s honeyed voice at the forefront.
