Chattanooga Soccer Battles Eagles to Scoreless Draw

After an hour and 15 minute delay due to drenching rains Sunday afternoon, the Chattanooga women’s soccer team battled Morehead State (2-5-2) to a double-overtime scoreless draw at the UTC Sports Complex.

The Eagles edged Chattanooga 14-13 on shots with a 7-6 shots on goal advantage and the two teams were nearly identical in possession. Mocs keeper Abbey Saddler corralled all seven marks by Morehead State while the Eagles’ goalkeeper had six saves.

“Tough match,” Mocs head coach Gavin McKinney said. “Morehead [State] was organized and made things very difficult for us.”

In the second overtime, the Mocs had two chances for the Golden Goal in the 103rd minute. AK Anderson broke free down the middle of the field and was outpacing her defender. Her shot from 10 yards out was stopped by the Morehead State keeper but rebounded back out and picked up by UTC’s Cameron Giles. Her shot toward the goal was just off target.

Samantha Shaw, also with a shot on goal in the final 10 minute period, had a team-best two shots. Also firing off a pair for UTC was Anderson, Giles, Mackenzie Smith and Faith Gober.

The Eagles’ Abby Vanhoeve and Gabby Nastasi each had a game-high three shots.

“We were not at our best today,” McKinney said. “We are confident that the group will bounce back for the start of SoCon play next weekend.”

The Mocs close out non-conference play at 3-5-1 and will open Southern Conference action Friday evening at home against UNCG with a Sunday match against VMI. Check out GoMocs.com for game times.
