Royal Canoe Share “Surrender”

Today, Winnipeg-based indie-pop powerhouse collective Royal Canoe have shared the official music video for their track “Surrender,” which comes off their recently released album, Sidelining (via Paper Bag Records).

“We’ve been fans of Vince’s video work with other artists in the Winnipeg scene over the last couple of years. We reached out to him for this project and he presented the concept of a Heist film with a dance-off (instead of a shootout). We instantly loved the idea and are so happy with how it turned out. It was nice to leave the dancing to the professionals this time,” says Matt Peters of Royal Canoe.

“It was an absolute honor to get a chance to work with Royal Canoe for a music video on their new single ‘Surrender.’ They completely trusted and were open to my wacky idea for the video. I wanted something that reflected Surrender as a whole, something that reflected the sound of the song rather than the actual words sung. From my initial listen to ‘Surrender,’ the song begins and I couldn’t really predict where the song is going and found that to be one of its best attributes. It was a very unique song in my opinion as it played out like a story with many twists and turns along the way. Therefore, unpredictability became the theme. I wanted to capture and formulate an idea that can somehow replicate that feeling. As a filmmaker, my source of inspirations are films and we decided to go with a narrative that was heavily influenced by specific genre elements and right before the audience is getting comfortable with what they believe the story is to be, we completely twist into another. The visuals and the song are completely different but in a strange way reflect one another,” says director, Vince Tang.
