Chattanooga Indoor Volleyball Falls to The Citadel, 3-0

After escaping Greenville with a thrilling five-set win 24 hours ago, Chattanooga’s indoor volleyball team was unable to keep their momentum going in South Carolina on Saturday night, falling in three sets (25-21, 26-24, 25-12) to The Citadel inside McAlister Field House.

The hosts took a lead early, forcing UTC to call its first timeout down 12-7. The Mocs came out of the timeout firing, winning 8 of the next 12 points to come within one, but the Bulldogs held strong. The Citadel didn’t allow UTC to take the lead and held another sizeable advantage up six with set point. The Mocs fell in the opening frame 25-21 after registering just five kills in the frame. The Citadel’s Sharlissa de Jesus led the set with six kills and nine digs.

Down 3-1 early in set two, UTC battled back quickly and won the next five points to double the Bulldog’s total. UTC kept a 3-6 point lead throughout most of the set and took a 20-14 lead towards the end of the frame. The Bulldogs won four straight points to inch within two points and force
Chattanooga to call timeout. Out of the timeout, the hosts tied the set at 21 but a kill from Maia Rackel and a Bulldog error gave Mocs their two-point lead back. The Citadel tied the match at 23 before holding a set point. UTC was able to fend off one set point, but not another as the Bulldogs completed their comeback to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Citadel took the momentum into the third set. The hosts had a sizeable lead throughout the frame beginning with a 12-7 cushion, forcing UTC’s first timeout. The Bulldogs did not let up, holding a 10-point lead throughout the final portion of the frame and took that advantage to sweep the match.

For the third match this season, Chloe Bryan led the team in kills; she had eight in the three sets on 13 swings.

Defensively, Paige Gallentine posted double-digit digs for the 17th straight match.

The Citadel’s Ali Ruffin led the match with 12 kills, while de Jesus had the matches lone double-double with 13 digs and 11 kills.

UTC moves to 0-9 when hitting below .2000 and 1-7 when trailing 2-0 this season.
