Today, Hiatus Kaiyote shares a new single “Canopic Jar” including a hypnotizing 32 second introduction titled “Journey To The Crystal Tomb”. “Canopic Jar” is a haunting, cyclical track exploring the descent into the darker corners of the mind. A 12″ vinyl release of the single package will be available on October 29th.
Nai Palm shares the inspiration for “Canopic Jar” – “A canopic jar is an ancient artifact from Egypt. When they preserved the body through mummification for the afterlife, the organs were contained in a canopic jar. I used this image of preserving something in this lifetime to be accessed in another as a metaphor for an un obtainable relationship, to re-appear throughout the ages because circumstance won’t allow it this time around.”
This single arrives on the heels of Hiatus Kaiyote’s new video for “Chivalry Is Not Dead” and their critically acclaimed new album Mood Valiant out now via Brainfeeder Records / Ninja Tune, which The New York Times described as “life-affirming, genre-defying cosmic soul” and Pitchfork praised as “the most vibrant they’ve ever sounded.” The new video also follows the bands recent Tiny Desk concert, hailed by NPR as a “brilliant performance.”
Mood Valiant was released after a six-year period where the band spent time touring, writing, and recording before landing in Rio de Janeiro in 2019 to work with legendary Brazilian arranger Arthur Verocai. The result is an album, bookended by Verocai’s strings, that relaxes into a groove: sunlit, beguiling, masterful. Behind everything is Hiatus’ familiar sense of musical adventure, their knack for making the complex sound simple, evident in previously-released singles “Get Sun”, “Chivalry Is Not Dead” and “Red Room,” which saw them receive co-signs from Kehlani, Doja Cat, Willow Smith and Virgil Abloh, among others.
