Mocs’ Nicholson Named Preseason All-SoCon, Wrestling Picked Third

Chattanooga Wrestling’s Drew Nicholson notched his first career preseason All-SoCon accolade. The reigning Southern Conference Champion at 165 pounds was named to the Preseason All-SoCon Team, the league office on Thursday afternoon.

Nicholson went 13-5 overall last season, 9-3 in dual action and 6-2 in SoCon matches. After winning the tournament as the No. 3 seed, he was named the SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler.

The Memphis native earned the No. 26 seed at the NCAA Tournament and defeated Penn State’s No. 23 Joe Lee (10-4).

Appalachian State was named the preseason favorite with 62 points and six first-place votes. The reigning Southern Conference Champion, Campbell, came in a close second with 59 points and three first-place votes. The Mocs rounded out the top three with 50 points.

App State led all teams with five selections on the Preseason All-SoCon Team, while Campbell had three. Chattanooga and The Citadel both completed the poll with one player on the squad.

The 2021-22 Chattanooga Wrestling season gets underway with the Blue and Gold Scrimmage on Saturday, Oct. 30 prior to the homecoming football game vs. Furman. The scrimmage is slated to begin at 10 a.m. in the First Horizon Pavilion.
