Mocs’ Volleyball Bests Bulldogs with Balanced Attack

The Chattanooga Mocs’ indoor volleyball team continued its homecoming weekend success on Friday evening inside Maclellan Gym. The Blue and Gold defeated the visiting Citadel Bulldogs 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 25-15, 25-14) with three hitters posting double-digit kills.

The Mocs took the momentum from last night’s match and won the contest’s first three points. UTC continued its damage early in the match as the team took a 7-2 lead, forcing the Bulldogs to take an early timeout. After Maia Rackel put down a block, assisted by Sophia Bossong, the hosts went up 18-10. The Citadel found a spark and won the next four points to cut their deficit and the Mocs called their first timeout. The Citadel kept it close throughout the remainder of the set, but the Mocs stayed in charge, never allowing the visitors to tie the frame. Rackel’s fourth kill of the set gave UTC the 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 victory in the opener. UTC hit .353 and held the Bulldogs to a .133 clip.




The Citadel got out to a better start in the second set. It was back and forth early, but three kills and an ace from Sharlissa De Jesus put the ‘Dogs up 14-11 as the Mocs called timeout. Multiple kills and a strong block on the pin by Bossong kept the Mocs within three but back-to-back UTC errors brought The Citadel back up five as the Blue and Gold took their final timeout of the match down 19-14. The visitors kept their lead throughout the rest of the set, taking the frame, 25-18.

It was 4-2 in the third set with the Mocs holding a small advantage before the Blue and Gold turned the momentum back around. UTC used two kills from Gylian Finch and one from Neill to take a 9-4 lead in the frame. The Blue and Gold continued its run to hold a 16-7 advantage as The Citadel called its final timeout of the set. The Mocs continued its third-set dominance, taking the third set 25-15. UTC never gave up the lead after winning the first point of the set as the Blue and Gold held The Citadel to a match-low .039 attack clip in the frame. Finch posted six kills on 11 swings in the match and logged five digs. Gallentine tallied eight digs in the third set alone.

After a back-and-forth beginning of the fourth set, the Mocs held a three-point 11-8 lead after a Bulldog service error. From that moment, the Blue and Gold won seven straight points capped off by two Bossong aces. UTC capped off the stellar fourth frame with Rackel’s 14th kill of the match. UTC limited the Bulldogs to a .000 hitting percentage in the final frame.

Gallentine continued her success defensively with 20 digs. For the fifth time this season, four Mocs finished in double figures as Bossong, Finch and Rackel all posted double-doubles with double-digit digs.

Rackel and Finch recorded 14 kills apiece, while Rackel had 12 digs and Finch tallied 11. Rackel added the Mocs’ lone solo block and three block assists, while leading all hitters with a .316 hitting percentage.

Bossong quarterbacked the UTC offense with 41 assists and capped off her second-straight double-double with 12 digs.

Chloe Bryan was the third player with double-digit kills as the freshman attacker hit .310 with 10. Marcelle Baez-Carlo and Neill added six kills each.

UTC held The Citadel’s offensive leader de Jesus to a .088 hitting percentage as the senior attacker led the match with 19 digs.

The Mocs sided out of 80% of sideout opportunities in the third and fourth sets. In sets one, three and four, they never gave up the lead after leading 1-0.
