Chattanooga Mocs Wrestling Downs Cumberland in Season Opener, 25-15

The Chattanooga wrestling team opened its 2021-22 campaign with a 25-15 victory over Cumberland inside Maclellan Gym on Saturday night.

“We got a first look at six guys that have never wrestled in a Chattanooga singlet before,” Head Coach Kyle Ruschell said. “That’s something they’ll remember forever.”

Cumberland got the scoring started with a win at 165 pounds that was decided by a riding time point. Carial Tarter put the Mocs on the board, tying the match at three after a 6-2 decision at 174.

Thomas Sell didn’t take long to record his first career win as a Moc. He pinned Cumberland’s Austin Antcliffe 43 seconds into the second period.

Brayden Palmer scored a 6-0 decision at 133 after Cumberland won three matches, two by decision and one by forfeit. With three matches to go, Cumberland held a 15-12 lead.

Down three points, Colton Landers came through for the Blue and Gold, putting UTC up three with a pin at 141 pounds. Following Lander’s victory, Noah Castillo secured the match for the Mocs by major decision, 17-5.

In the final match of the dual, Grant Lundy registered a 7-3 decision to put UTC up 25-15.

“We saw some good things, but we have a lot of things to catch up on,” Ruschell added. “I’m excited for when we have our whole team back together. We need to get healthy.”
