Chattanooga Mocs Volleyball Hosts Furman in Opening Round of SoCon Tournament

The Chattanooga Mocs’ indoor volleyball team will play in Maclellan Gym for one more match this season on Monday night at 6 p.m. The eighth-seeded Mocs will host the ninth seeded Furman Paladins.

UTC entered the final week of October 2-8 in SoCon play with six matches to go. The Mocs defeated Furman, The Citadel, Mercer, ETSU and Wofford to close out the regular season. The Mocs lone defeat in the last three weeks have come to Samford on the road. The Bulldogs have won their last six.

UTC’s 7-9 SoCon record moved the Mocs into a tie for fifth place in the SoCon standings with The Citadel, Western Carolina and ETSU. The fifth-place finish is the best for the squad since 2016 when they finished third. UTC is the eight seed due to tiebreak scenarios between the four teams.

The winner of the Furman-UTC contest will play Mercer, the No. 1 seed. Mercer and UNCG finished the regular season as Co-Champions, marking the first time since UNCG joined the SoCon they have finished at the top of the league. UNCG will play the seventh-seeded Bulldogs of The Citadel. The winner of that match will play either No. 3 Samford or No. 6 ETSU. Finally, Wofford and Western Carolina kick off the tournament in the No. 4 vs. No. 5 match. The tournament is hosted by Samford who turned its season around, beginning SoCon play with a 3-7 record and won its last six.

UTC is coming off of a 3-0 sweep on senior night over the Wofford Terriers. The match was the second time this season the team hit over .300 and the first since the second match of the season. The .340 attack clip is the highest for the team in SoCon action since they hit .411 at Mercer on Oct. 1, 2016. The match halted a three-match losing skid to the Terriers.

The Mocs have defeated Furman twice this season, a five-set win in Greenville and a sweep over the Paladins in Chattanooga. The Mocs are hitting .271 vs. Furman this season and averaging 13.63 kills and 19.88 digs per set. Additionally, UTC recorded 20 blocks, tallying 2.50 per set. Senior’s Maia Rackel and Gylian Finch have combined for 7.5 kills per set against Furman this season. Finch is hitting .295 and Rackel is hitting .267. Second-year libero, Paige Gallentine, has posted 48 digs vs. Furman, six per set.

Furman concluded the regular season 7-19 and 2-14 in SoCon action. Both of Furman’s league victories came against Wofford and they have lost seven in a row. Six of those seven losses have come in three sets, the other loss was in four to No. 2 UNCG. The Paladins are led by Bella Tolone who is averaging 3.10 kills and 2.63 digs per set. Furman’s libero, Andrea Aceveda averages 4.45 digs per set, posting 423 this season.

Furman leads the all-time series 48-25 and Chattanooga has won the last two contests. The Mocs are 16-19 against the Paladins in Chattanooga. UTC is 4-3 against Furman in the SoCon Tournament with the Paladins winning the last match 3-0 to go to the NCAA Tournament.
