Moses Sumney Releases ‘Live From Blackalachia’

Moses Sumney releases his new project Live from Blackalachia today. The live album arrives on the heels of the release of the counterpart performance film, Blackalachia. The Live from Blackalachia album and Blackalachia film are the audio and visual documentation of a live performance, filmed outside on the top of a mountain in Western North Carolina with a 7-piece band and directed by Moses himself. Live from Blackalachia contains re-imagined, dynamic band arrangements of songs from Moses’ first two albums and was recorded in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the summer of 2020, on a stage built on a hill nestled within a 72-acre mountain range.

The Blackachia film was released in partnership with WePresent, the digital arts platform of WeTransfer, wherein the platform acted as executive producers and commissioners for the project.

In January 2020, Moses Sumney and his band gathered in Western North Carolina to design festival-ready versions of songs from Aromanticism and græ. After the world shut down and tour was canceled, Moses decided to share the show, but in a new way. Not just a live stream or recording but via a concert film. To make the vision come to life, in the summer of 2020, the band reconvened in Asheville and designed the show for Blackalachia. Moses directed the conceptual concert film himself.

Moses’ words on the creation of the Blackalachia projects:

“In early 2020, my band and I gathered in my home in Western North Carolina, living and breathing together, re-arranging songs from my first 2 albums into a live odyssey. As the year unfurled and the international tour was wiped off the schedule, we took to the Appalachian mountains and filmed and recorded Blackalachia.

The band congregated in the heat of a lulled summer, with a mere 10 days to learn and re-learn the music. Drums, keys, guitars, double bass, violin, saxophones, trombone. Bees, birds, squirrels, crickets, frogs. Over the course of two days, we filmed 14 songs, totally live, the trees as our audience, the grasshoppers our background singers.

Live from Blackalachia is a wild imagining of what can happen when we seek not just to reclaim nature, but to re-integrate with it.”

Live from Blackalachia and the Blackalachia film are the first full-length projects released on Moses’ creative label Tuntum. Tuntum is a recording label, production company, and creative agency based in Asheville, NC. It was founded with the intention of providing an umbrella under which the diverse array of creative projects — music, film, visual, and experiential — Moses and his collaborators work on can be housed.
