UTC Wrestling Improves to 2-0 in SoCon Action

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s wrestling team got off to a strong start on Friday evening against the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs and they never took their foot off the gas. The Mocs defeated the Runnin’ Bulldogs 37-4 in Southern Conference action to improve to 2-0 in league completion this season.

Ranked No. 24 in the latest Intermat Wrestling rankings, Fabian Gutierrez got the dual started quickly with a pin 80 seconds in at 125 pounds to give UTC a 6-0 lead. No. 22 Brayden Palmer extended the Mocs’ lead with a 9-2 decision at 133 before UTC went up 15-0 after Gardner-Webb forfeited the match at 141 pounds.

Noah Castillo (149) continued the success for the Mocs with an 8-2 decision to give the Mocs an 18-0 advantage. After missing the last two matches, Weston Wichman returned to the mat and didn’t allow a takedown or an escape to his opponent, taking an 8-0 major decision over Taylor Parks to put the Mocs up 22-0.

Drew Nicholson and Gardner-Webb’s Rodrick Mosley forced the first overtime in the match. After neither wrestler could score in the first overtime period, Nicholson secured an escape 10 seconds into TB-1, which was enough to get the decision, putting the Mocs on top 25-0 with four matches remaining.

At 174 pounds, Carial Tarter found himself down 3-2, but put together a takedown with less than 30 seconds remaining in the bout to pick up the 4-3 decision.




The match of night was at 184 where in his second match of the season at that weight class, Thomas Sell hit Gardner-Webb’s 2021 NCAA qualifier, Jha’Quan Anderson, with a cradle late in the third period to secure a pin. Both of Sell’s wins at 184 pounds this season have come via fall.

Matthew Waddell wrestled in his first match at 197 pounds this season and continued the Mocs’ winning ways. He won by a 4-1 decision to bring the lead to 37-0. Gardner-Webb scored a 13-1 major decision at 285 to avoid the shutout.

The last time the two teams met, Parks and Mosley defeated Wichman and Nicholson, respectively. The Mocs’ wrestlers flipped the script as Wichman and Nicholson walked away with a decision and major decision.

With the win, UTC improves to 4-8 overall and 2-0 in SoCon action. Gardner-Webb falls to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in league competition. UTC is now 18-0 all-time vs. Gardner-Webb.

The Mocs return to the mat on Sunday as they stay in North Carolina to face Campbell at 1 p.m.
