UTC Men’s Golf Battles Windy Conditions in the Bahamas

It was a blustery day in paradise. The Chattanooga Mocs opened with 316 at the Nexus Collegiate battling high winds at Albany Golf Club. Through the trials and tribulations, one Moc shown brightly.

Sophomore Paul Conroy battled through the harsh conditions to card a 1-under par 71. It was an even more impressive feat considering the field’s scoring average which includes four teams ranked in the top 40 in the nation.

“I’m very impressed with Paul’s 71,” interim head coach Miles Moseley noted. “The average score was around 79 today, and he blew it away.

“The wind was absolutely brutal. Only 30 players broke 80 on the day so that also shows you kind of day Leon (Bader) and Parker (Highsmith) had. The wind is supposed to be similar tomorrow, so with a good day, we have the opportunity to make a move on the leaderboard.”

The Mocs are in ninth with the team’s 316 matching the average of 79 per golfer. The group is one behind Jacksonville State in eighth, two off of No. 32 Indiana in seventh and trails Mississippi State in sixth by only four.

Conroy’s 71 is tied for second. Bader, playing as an individual, carded 78 and sits in 22nd. Highsmith is another stroke behind him, tied for 27th. Complete scoring is below.

Ohio State was unfazed. The Buckeyes 293 leads second-place Clemson (302) by nine. OSU’s Adam Wallin is the individual leader at 4-under 68.

Tuesday’s second 18 starts at 7:45 a.m., on the 10th hole for the Mocs playing alongside the Hoosiers and Gamecocks. Braedon Wear starts us off followed by Gabe Hunter, Alex Cobb, Highsmith, Conroy and Bader in successive groups.
