Chattanooga runners Faith Brown and Emmy Davis earned qualifying times for the Sunday finals at the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at the Corp Physical Training Center on the VMI campus.
“We met several of our first-day goals,” Mocs head coach Andy Meyer said.
Brown placed fifth in the second heat with a time of 5:26.39 and finished 10th overall to earn a spot in the Sunday final of the Mile run.
Davis was third in the first heat with a time of 2:22.33 and placed seventh overall in the prelims to qualify for the final Sunday afternoon.
“Faith stayed close to the leaders and they pulled her to a qualifying spot,” Meyer said. Emmy ran the same type of race and qualified for the 800 meter finals.”
In the final race of the day, the Mocs Distance Medley Relay team just missed all-conference honors placing fourth with a time of 12:40.22.
“At the very best we thought we’d get fifth to seventh,” Meyer said. “The ladies met and exceeded expectations.
“Ashtyn [Hagood] led off with a solid 1200. Faith [Brown] maintained position with another solid 400 leg and Emmy [Davis] moved us up a place in the 800. Emma Russum was able to catch one more team, Wofford, and hold off Western Carolina. Great way to end Day One.”
Haggod ran a 3:52.60 in the 1200 meter leg with Brown covering the 400 meter distance at 1:05.23. Davis ran the 800 meter with a time of 2:24.07 and Russum anchored the DMR with a 5:18.34 1600 meter leg.
Sunday’s events will include the finals of the Mile and 800 meter run along with the 5000 meter and 4×400 meter relay.
“Hopefully our kids run to their strengths tomorrow,” Meyer closed.
