UTC Beach Volleyball Defeats Lions, Falls to Seahawks in Home Opener

After spending the first two weekends on the road, the Chattanooga Beach Volleyball team returned to the Scenic City for its home opener on Thursday afternoon. The Mocs fell in the first matchup, 3-2, to the UNC Wilmington Seahawks before defeating North Alabama by the same score in the finale of the day.

UTC and UNCW split the first two matches at the No. 4 and 5 pairs. In their first contest as a duo, Julia Davis and Joy Courtright (No. 5) defeated UNCW’s pair 21-18, 23-21 to give UTC its first point of the match.

The top three pairs all needed a third set to decide the contest. The Seahawks won the No. 2 and 3 matches to secure the victory for UNCW. Neva Clark and Baylee Young won their third set at No. 1, 15-12.

Like they did in Chattanooga’s first match, North Alabama and the Mocs split at the No. 4 and 5 pairs. Davis and Courtright won in three sets for their second victory of the day at No. 5.

Paige Gallentine and Neva Clark dominated at the second pair with a 21-9, 21-11 sweep before Baylee Young and Gylian Finch secured the third point of the day with a 21-13, 21-13 victory at the top spot.

Chattanooga is now 5-2. UNCW improved to 8-3 after winning both of their matches on the day. UNA dropped to 4-3.

The Mocs return to the sand on tomorrow as they travel to Clarksville for the Governors Beach Challenge hosted by Austin Peay. Chattanooga’s first match is at noon EST vs. Carson Newman.
