UTC Softball Suffers Heartbreaking Extra-Inning Setback to Spartans

After UNCG’s Softball field has seen offensive explosions over the last few weeks, the Greensboro crowd was treated to a pitcher’s duel on Sunday afternoon.

The Chattanooga Mocs’ softball team and UNCG needed nine innings to finish the contest after the two teams ended the seventh tied at two. The hosts remained perfect in Southern Conference action with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, taking the game 3-2.

Chattanooga dropped to 21-18 overall and 5-4 in SoCon play, while UNCG improved to 28-11, 9-0.

The Mocs are back in action on Wednesday, April 13 as they make a midweek trip to Clarksville to face Austin Peay at 5:30 p.m.

Both pitchers were dealing through the first three innings with just two runners reaching the first time through the lineup. In the fourth, Kailey Snell netted the first hit of the game with a single to short. In the bottom half of the inning, UNCG got into the hit and run column with one swing as the Spartans’ Maycin Brown homered to center. The Spartans doubled the lead with a bases-loaded sac fly later in the frame.

In the next half inning, with two outs, Reagan Armour stepped up to the dish and blasted a two-run home run over the left center wall, tying the game at two.

In the top half of the seventh, Acelynn Sellers led off the frame with a single, but UTC could not take the lead. UNCG’s leadoff hitter reached in the bottom of the seventh with a single off the wall in left. After a sacrifice bunt brought the winning run to second, Samantha Lagrama advanced to third on a wild pitch. Brooke Parrott got UNCG’s Maycin Brown to ground out, sending the game into extras.

After neither team scored in the eighth, the game was still knotted at two heading into the bottom of the ninth. With a runner on third, UNCG’s Brown singled to the left center gap, securing the 3-2 win for the Spartans.

Izzy Alley started the game for the Mocs and did not allow a hit until the fourth frame, but that home run gave UNCG the lead. She tossed three complete innings, allowing two hits, three walks and recorded a strikeout.

Parrott was strong in relief, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing just one run on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Armour finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Olivia Lipari, Kaili Snell and Acelynn Sellers registered the other hits for Chattanooga.

UNCG’s Brown and Matthijs both had two hits in the contest. Morgan Scott secured her second win of the weekend with a nine-inning complete game. She struck out 12 and allowed two runs on five hits without a walk.
