UTC Softball Falls to No. 18 Auburn in Final Midweek of the Season

The Chattanooga Mocs’ softball team’s three-run seventh inning wasn’t enough to come back from the 18th-ranked Auburn Tigers’ 7-0 lead on Wednesday evening in Auburn, Ala. The Tigers ended the threat in the seventh to secure the 7-3 win.

Chattanooga dropped to 21-20 overall, while Auburn improved to 34-9.

The Mocs return to Southern Conference action this weekend as the Blue and Gold come back to Alabama to take on Samford in Birmingham, Saturday and Sunday. The series begins with a Saturday doubleheader at 2 p.m. EST.

Auburn opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, scoring on a sac fly. A few batters later, the Tigers’ Sydney Cox belted a two-run home run over the center field wall, giving the hosts a 3-0 lead after one.

In the second, the Tigers plated two more runs on a home run and RBI groundout to hold a 5-0 advantage. Auburn added a pair of runs in the third on a two-out single up the middle.

In the seventh, the Mocs got on the board on a wild pitch, scoring Skylar Berkhiser from third. Gracey Kruse followed up with a 2-RBI double on the next pitch, bringing Chattanooga’s deficit to 7-3.

Auburn’s Maddie Penta reentered the game and struck out the last three batters to close the contest.

Brooke Parrott started the game for Chattanooga and allowed two runs on one hit and a walk in a third of an inning. Izzy Alley was the first out of the bullpen, tossing one inning and allowing three runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout. Hannah Wood tossed the final 4.2 innings for the Mocs. She allowed two runs on six hits with a strikeout.

Reagan Armour and Kruse led the Mocs with two hits, while Kruse netted two RBI.
