Chattanooga Mocs junior Dorota Zalewska earned he second win of the season this week capturing the Southern Conference Championship at the Dye Course at Barefoot Landing Resort in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. That led to Wednesday’s announcement that she earned her second SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week honor.
It’s actually back-to-back wins for Zalewska. She claimed the win at the Brickyard Collegiate on April 4 and followed that with her first Student-Athlete of the Week award.
“It’s a product of her work ethic,” Coach Colette Murray explained. “I mentioned it yester after her win, things that were her weaknesses a couple of years ago are now strengths. She holed so many clutch putts this week like the 5-footer winner on 18.
“She’s earned everything with the work she’s put in to get here.”
Zalewska’s win put her in elite company.
• One of three Mocs to win three or more times in their career: Emma de Groot ’11 (6) & Emily McLennan ’16 (3).
• Just the fourth time with multiple wins in one season: de Groot (2, 2007-08), de Groot (2008-09) & McLennan (2, 2015-16).
• 7th SoCon Individual Champion: de Groot (2011), Jordan Britt (2012), Agathe Sauzon (2013), McLennan (2014), Megan Woods (2016) & Monica San Juan (2019).
Her 1-under 215 matched San Juan, her former teammate, for the second-best SoCon Tourney tally by a Moc. McLennan’s 2-under 214 is the program record in the event although all three numbers came on different tracts.
Zalewska tied the school record for par or better cards with 1-under 71 to start and complete play in North Myrtle Beach. That gives her 14 which matches McLennan’s total in 2015-16. Her 72.48 stroke average in nearly a stroke better than McLennan’s record of 73.34 in 2016.
Next up is the NCAA Championships. Regional play begins May 9 in one of six locations: Albuquerque, N.M. (Championship Course at UNM), Ann Arbor, Mich. (U-M Golf Course), Franklin, Tenn. (Vanderbilt Legends Club), Stanford, Calif. (Stanford G.C.), Stillwater, Okla. (Karstern Creek G.C.) & Tallahassee, Fla. (Don Veller Seminole G.C.). Zalewska looks to grab an individual spot reserved for the top two finishers on non-advancing teams (Top 4).
The announcement for regional location is Wednesday, April 27, at 5 p.m., on the Golf Channel.
