Today, Zoon, the musical project fronted by Daniel Monkman, shares a music video for “Oil Pastel/Dope Sick (ft. Cadence Weapon)”, the final single off his brand new EP, Big Pharma, out now, via Paper Bag Records + Cadence Weapon’s first single since her recent Polaris win. Zoon’s new 5-track EP is notable for its collaborations and features, expressly highlighting the musician’s adept ability to experiment and constantly defy musical categorization.
“‘Oil Pastel’ is a song I wrote while trying to navigate through addiction and a relapse. I can really speak on the lyrics but the music came from a very vulnerable place. It also came from my love of hip hop music. Growing up as a kid it was hard for me to relate to rock bands who sang about growing up in the suburbs. I gravitated towards hip hop because I absolutely related to their lyrics,” says Daniel.
“The creation of the ‘Oil pastel/ dope sick’ came from my lived experience within the opioid crisis that devastated my home community Selkirk, Manitoba. I was in the middle of that chaos for many years, channeling those emotions In an artistic way allowed me to pour out music effortlessly during the writing of ‘Oil pastel/dope sick’. I managed to write and record all of the instrumentals within one evening, it was a very fast and sleek process.”
